The 2008 catalog has been safely delivered to the printer (whew!) and as the big day approaches, I can now turn my focus back to the website! Lots of you have inquired about various pieces of art that are not yet on the website… I will be adding approximately 50 more pieces over the next 4 days so please stay tuned!

The Auction’s primary list of art donors was divided amongst the Advocates and new names were introduced. The role of the Advocates is to communicate all auction news and dates to the artists and arrange transportation of artwork as needed.

The 2008 Advocates include Charlie Blunt, Molly Miller, Lauren Turner, Rachel Berry, Dan Fulkerson, Adrian Brown, Mary Kay Kennedy.

The Little Art Gallery and Craft Collection, established in 1968, provides Raleigh, North Carolina with original art and fine craft by regional and nationally recognized artists.

A long time supporter of Works of Heart itself, Little Art Gallery represents 2007 Signature Artist Stephen White, as well as Bruce Couch, Joann Couch, Billy Farmer, John Gaitenby and Bob Rankin.

New Artist: Merrill Shatzman

Inspired by hieroglyphs, calligraphy and writing from around the world, Merrill Shatzman creates layered abstract woodblock prints on handmade papers, reminiscent of ancient manuscripts. She lives in Durham and is both an artist and an associate professor of art at Duke University.

Shatzman’s “glyphs” are in numerous museum collections including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art and Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum. MORE.

Featured Works by Yuhuei Pierce and New July Hours at Flanders Art Gallery

Raleigh, NC – Flanders Art Gallery will feature works by Yuhuei Pierce from July 10 – 30. Pierce specializes in paintings that walk a line between abstract expressionism and minimalism. Her white canvases seek to capture movement, be it through the interplay of colored lines or the sweeping application of varied textures. For Pierce, such an effect is achieved by balancing her technical training and proficiency with “assuming a monastic mindset.”

Pierce traveled to the United States from Taiwan in 1980 to pursue graduate degrees in sociology and library science and then went on to earn a PhD in mathematical sociology. Her art studies took place at the Academy of Art in Singapore as well as through a private teacher in London. She maintains a year-round studio in Wake Forest and a summer studio in Kittery Point, Maine.

There will be an artist reception on Friday, July 18, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Flanders Art Gallery will change its hours for the month of July. From July 7 – August 1, 2008, the gallery will be open Thursday through Saturday from 12 – 8 p.m. and by appointment.

The gallery will be closed except by appointment on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, in observation of the holiday. Because this closing will prevent it from being open for First Friday, the gallery shall remain open until 9 p.m. on July 11, as shall select other Raleigh galleries.

Flanders Art Gallery is located at 18 Seaboard in the Shops at Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh. Regular gallery hours will resume on August 1, 2008 and run 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Tues - Fri., and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Sat.
